Week 3 Blog-Tyler Lechner

I think the key to our groups success this semester is good communication. We are all in the same boat and have a lot going on in our lives whether that is class, work, or even just time away from everything. I believe strong team communication will keep us on task and help us to remember our responsibilities to this project. A project like this is very far from being due, but we need to stay diligent and put in some work every week so that we can stay on task. Good teams are able to communicate efficiently and are able to bend without breaking. As I said, we are all busy and as a team member I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up the slack for someone having a tough week as long as they have communicated that that is the case. I think a bad team and their problems always stem from or in some way are affected by poor communication.

For this week, we assigned research to all group members so we can brainstorm our three main ideas for this project. I personally am looking into a possible week long vegan diet, or some other form of healthy eating that is easily doable by a college student. The challenges I have encountered are trying to relate these diets to the time constraints and resources that a college student may have. In the future I might begin with tailoring my searches to specifically college students, rather than starting with being vegan.

Week 2 Blog-Tyler Lechner

Lincoln is home to many thriving businesses created by students, recent graduates, and even people that decided to step away from school. I don’t have any specific ideas yet but restaurants or small/new businesses would be very interesting to check out. I would like to find a young business or organization , I think they would be very receptive to our attention and would allow us to see every side of their business. I would love to learn about any businesses of organizations in the sports or media industries, but I love learning and am willing to do the project on anything my group decides would be good. Any subject would be cool to cover, but we may run into problems regarding proximity, we need to pick one that we would have unlimited access to. I think opendorse or a Haymarket restaurant would be interesting but I’m sure those have already been documented multiple times. So far our group has made a group chat, created our team blog, and we wrote our team contract. We did all of this as a group in class on Thursday, but over the weekend and early into next week we will hopefully have some good ideas flowing for class.

Week 2 Blog Post

This week we met as a group for the first time and started to lay out the basics for this semester. We shared our contact information and then moved on to sharing our ideas for the project, as well as what our individual strengths were. I shared that I prefer to do anything related to writing, and it seems like we have a pretty well-rounded group with some people’s strengths being in photography, videography, graphics and editing. While we are still brainstorming different possibilities for our project, we discussed the possibility of working with a new, primarily Latina, girl scout troop in Lincoln. We could potentially help to get the word out about this new group as well as to help them increase cookie sales, among other things. I love this idea and think that I could be really interesting, considering they are building this troop from the ground up, which is not something you really get to see often. The only worry that I have with this idea is if we would be able to get enough content.

As far as challenges for the rest of the semester go, I think the only thing that I am worried about is how busy all of our schedules may be. As of right now, we are planning on meeting on Sunday afternoons, which I think should be fine, I am just slightly worried that as the semester continues and we have more work to complete that we will not be able to find enough time to meet as a group. With this being said, I am still optimistic that we will find a way to meet as often as is necessary to succeed this semester.

Week 2 Blog Post

This week, we met with our groups and started working together as a team for the first time. Our group seemed pretty cohesive with a diverse set of talents and interests. As a team we talked about a couple of possibilities for project ideas. The one that stuck out the most to me was the possibility of working with a group of girl scouts that are primarily a latina group. We could aid them in helping sell cookies and anything else they need to get off the ground. As a new group of girl scouts, I think it would be interesting to see how they start groups and teach the young girls about girl scouts. The challenges that I can foresee happening could be the possibility of red tape around getting permission to film and take photos of the girls.

This week our group worked together to communicate our strengths, talk about possible meeting times, and put together a contract. Our group seemed to have a tight schedule but I believe that we will be able to make time once a week to meet. Our contract talked a lot about communication and just putting in the effort to make sure we are all on the same page at all times.

Week 2 Blog Post

This week our team gather for the first time and introduced ourselves. After exchanging names and information, we decided on Groupme for our main method of communication. Once we set up our blog site and Groupme accounts, we started doing some light brainstorming and Jacqueline provided a lot of great ideas. Out of all the ideas, I think I like the possibility of working with one of the Latino organizations she’s a part of called MASA. I think it’d be a beneficial opportunity to share their stories and goals as an organization. We managed to have a decent amount of dialogue between preferences for ideas, but we didn’t specifically land on anything.

The most useful part of the meeting in my opinion occurred when we all shared our strengths and talents. I shared that I have decent videography and editing skills, along with writing. We found out one of our teammates specializes in photography, while others preferred graphic design and writing. I think our team has an over all, advantageous set of talents, and I’m confident this project will go smoothly.

As far as challenges go, it seems we all have very busy schedules. That’s not very unusual at all but for me personally, I do fear myself having too full of a schedule this semester. Then again, I thrive under pressure!

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
